"Treatment at Emergency"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

I recently tried to make a GP appointment for my spouse, but all Drs were fully booked, and I was told to go to the Albany Hospital (Health Campus).  We presented at the Triage at 10.30am and didn't have to wait long.  My spouse is elderly, has had a heart attack (4 stents) and has a pacemaker, had no flu or cold symptoms but had a hacking cough and was very chesty.  They normally have a bit of a chronic dry cough with the medication they take.  Staff did a nose test, and it was Influenza B.  We were moved to an interview room to wait for a Dr.  A nurse took my spouse's temperature and BP.  By 12 noon we had seen the Dr who wanted a chest xray  done & said they would get them to come and collect us.  At 1pm the Dr came b ack to check if my spouse had been done...they hadn't.

At 2.50pm we were still waiting and wanted to go home.  I managed to attract a nurse and told them we had had nothing to eat or drink since breakfast and to tell the Dr we wanted to go home. We didn't just want to walk out.   The nurse did tell the Dr and eventually the portable xray arrived. and it was done in the room.  It showed nothing and we were free to go at 3.20pm..... no anti biotics needed, just fluids and rest..

We had just got home, and the Dr rang to say that another Dr had seen the xray and that they had written a prescription for a 5-day course of anti-biotics..  They very kindly sent it to the Pharmacy for us.   We then had another problem as the pills were for 5 days but the Dr had written the script for 3 days, so the chemist rang them about it.  I believe the Dr was rude to them, .   and wouldn't correct it    The next day I had to ring the Hospital and explain it all again, and get another script done- that Dr wasn't on duty  - but someone else wrote it !

I am elderly. I couldn't fill my name in at the beginning for some reason. I hope this will work OK,

Dear squatfx47,

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you faced during your spouse's visit to Albany Hospital. It sounds like you had a very frustrating experience, especially given your spouse's health condition and the long wait times. It's understandable that you were concerned about the lack of food and drink, and the delay in getting the chest x-ray done.

It's good to know that the staff completed the necessary tests and provide a prescription, even though there were issues with the initial script. The miscommunication and the rude behaviour you encountered are certainly not acceptable, and it's important that these concerns are addressed. We have raised your concerns with the ED leadership team, and they will share your experience with all ED staff so that we can learn from your experience.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Your feedback is valuable and can help improve the services at the hospital. I hope your spouse is feeling better now and that future visits will be smoother and more efficient.

Kind regards

Kate Hambleton
