About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as a service user),

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding the excessive parking costs at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. My children’s parent was admitted last week after suffering a stroke. Since then, both my children have been taking it in turns to be by their parent's side every single day. Public transport is not an option.

However, they are each being charged $25 per day just to park at the hospital — an amount that is adding significant financial strain on our family during an already difficult time. It’s shocking that there are no reasonable concessions, discount rates, or support vouchers available for families in such circumstances. When someone is seriously ill, their loved ones should not have to choose between showing up to support them and being able to afford basic daily expenses.

I urge the hospital administration and relevant authorities to review this policy and implement more compassionate parking fee options for families of long-term or critical care patients. No one should be priced out of supporting their loved ones through medical emergencies.

Kind regards,

Dear listenkj53,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback about parking at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH).

I was very sorry to hear about your children’s parent recent admission to SCGH following a stroke and the financial strain that the cost of parking has caused your children at such a distressing time.

The parking charges for visitors and staff at Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre (QEIIMC), on which SCGH is located, are set by the Department of Health’s Metropolitan Access and Parking Strategy (MAPS).

We acknowledge the difficulty people have in relation to the costs of parking across WA health. Consideration can be given to families who are with us long term. The ward team caring for your children’s parent can help explore available support. Please talk to them, we’re here to help.

I hope this information provides you with an avenue for solution as I understand that access to parking is extremely stressful for both patients and their families.

I wish your children’s parent all the best in their recovery.

Kind regards,
Jodi Graham
