"Clinial nurse and pediatrician"

About: Koondoola Child Development Service

(as a parent/guardian),

My child is delayed across the board and has been for awhile. We have been trying to get them support since they were 2 but it wasn't until just before my child's 3rd birthday that finally someone listened to us and referred us for ot and speech. My child's speech since then referred them to pediatrician as they thought something was going on and my child had a case.

Was told that the wait list is 14-18 months. Within a month we had an appointment with the clinical nurse that went well we didn't feel judged at all. In that appointment we got given another appointment the next week to a gdd assessment. At that appointment we got fast tracked for the pediatrician. The appointment went from being 14-18 months to 3 weeks. They told us they had seen something and needed the pediatricians appointment.

At our child's pediatrician appointment the clinical nurse cut off the pediatrician when they were trying to ask us about the family history. Mind you this pediatrician actually had diagnosed a nephew of mine. But the clinical nurse cut them off and talked about my mental health which was all discussed at the first appointment and was made clear that it had nothing to do with my child.

What was meant to be an hour appointment was 20 minutes

With the first 5 being on my child the next 15 on me. As the clinical nurse was pushing us out the door they told us they would see us again in a year's time then pressed the button for the door told us to have a good day and walked off.

The appointment that we were meant to get an hour of our child being looked at and possibly get answers turned into 20 minutes pretty much got told it was our fault our child was delayed and pushed out the door. We felt so discouraged.

Couple weeks later we got the scores of our child's assessment. They were on the 5th percentile for speech, 6th percentile for fine motor and less the 1 percentile for social, emotional and person care.

We have since been told that my child should have been diagnosed with gdd due to those results and it was shocking that they weren't.

We now feel like we were just judged because we were youngish first time parents (mid-20s) who one had mental health and because of that our child suffered.

I hope no parent ever walks out of an appointment feeling like how we felt.

The child development centre are meant to help you and support families and that was the opposite of what we got.

We even requested a new meeting with the paediatrician without the clinical nurse there and got told no if we weren't willing to have clinical nurse there it's a no because the clinical nurse didn't think the appointment was needed.

Why fast track people if it's not needed

How is scores that low not causing concern.

It was disgusting to think that happened.

Now we are thinking of going private.
