"Discharge lounge nurse make my Aboriginal mom, and I feel respected and empowered!"

About: Armadale Hospital / Discharge Lounge

(as a relative),

Discharge lounge nurse Lisa, she texted me first, then called me to pick up mom as she got all documents she needed, she told me mom is ready to come home, that is really a good way to let me know her call is not from scammer, as you know scammer are everywhere now.

I am delighted Armadale hospital have staff like Lisa, she is pleasant, kind, gentle, respect towards mom, she has a cheerful smile, she checked on mom often to see if she is alright, she offers her puzzle games to do, magazines to read to kill time. Ain is helpful as well, she makes coffee, and give mom food to eat, she took mom to the loo on wheelchair. I know my mom, she can be very grumpy at times, especial when she is in the hospital, but this time she is a happy old girl.

Lisa is very polite and culture sensitive, she tried her best to make mom to feel as comfortable as possible, when you get older you get very sensitive to how people talk to you, right? She treats mom like her own mom!!! She keeps mom and I updated about mom discharge processes, she told us when she contacted doctor and pharmacist, I can see her really put effort into her work to make things go smoothly and promptly. Mom wants to ask doctor questions, and Lisa arranged doctor to come down to talk to mom. My mom told me she got everything she needed in no time, amazing.

When I arrived at discharge lounge, I noticed on the white board on the wall behind the nurse station:

"Healthy people, amazing care. Koorda moort, moorditj kwabadak"

At that moment, I feel truly pleased, respected, and have a sense of belonging as first nation people. Everything is connected. We are all connected to the land in Australia. With NAIDOC coming soon, I want to express my great gratitude towards Lisa and her staff in discharge lounge. Mom and I, and all my fellow Aboriginal people feel appreciated, feel so special and loved, thank you for respect us, you know every little thing count. She is doing her part to empower first nation people, she is thoughtful, I felt so warm in my heart, this is priceless attitude towards our people. Mom gives Lisa a big hug when she left discharge lounge.

Hopefully in the near future, discharge lounge can have some big and beautiful aboriginal paintings hang on the wall, this is a great way to share our values and make us feel like home. Coffee vending machine will be great additional, I am willing to pay for it, save my trip to cafe.

Thanks heaps.

P.s. Mom tell me the recliner chair she sits on is so soft and comfy, she wants to take it home with her. Mom said she wish that recliner can have massage function as well, haha.

Dear cheetahqc99

Kaya, and thank you for your beautiful message. It was a privilege to read your reflections on the care your mother received at Armadale Health Service, and I am so pleased to hear that both of you felt supported and at ease during her time with us.

We are incredibly proud of our discharge lounge team, and your kind words speak volumes about the warmth, professionalism, and compassion they bring to their work each day. Lisa and the team exemplify the values we strive to uphold across our service. Knowing your mother felt genuinely acknowledged, respected, and even joyful throughout her experience is something we will hold with great pride.

Your reflections on culturally respectful care are truly meaningful. Fostering an environment where Aboriginal patients, families, and communities feel genuinely welcomed and included is central to our values. It is deeply encouraging to know that the connection you experienced reflected that spirit. Your suggestion to incorporate Aboriginal artwork into the lounge is greatly appreciated and will be carefully considered.

Thank you once again for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and heartfelt message. Please pass on my warmest regards to your mother, I truly hope she is feeling well and in good spirits. And let her know we agree: a recliner chair with a massage function sounds like a brilliant idea!

Kind regards

Alisha Thompson
