"Broken Wrist in Northern Western Australia"

About: Broome Health Campus / Specialist Outpatients Hedland Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

On a Friday night I fell over a rock in the caravan park and knew instantly that I had broke my wrist. We were about 3 hours from Port Hedland hospital so my husband bundled me into the car and we headed off for the drive. I was in a bit of shock and was very shaky and in a lot of pain. We arrived at the hospital at about 11.30pm and there were only a few people waiting in emergency so we went straight to Triage and then seen a Doctor within 15 mins. The doctor and nurse were fantastic and organised for a backslab plaster to be installed on my arm. By this time it was about 1am and they said I would have to have an X-ray done at 8am the next morning. As we were 3 hours away the amazing Nurse set up beds for us in a spare room so we could get some sleep and supplied us with some sandwiches and juice as we had not had dinner. Could not believe how fantastic they were.

The next day they were very efficient and preformed my X-ray and placed a new cast on my arm. Once again the staff were so efficient and thorough. The Doctor told me I would need to see on Orthopaedic Surgeon just to check the break.

After arranging an appointment with an Orthopaedic Surgeon he told me I would need to get new plaster installed so I arranged an appointment at the Broome Hospital Fracture Clinic. Once again all the staff were so efficient and thorough. I ended up having to see an Occupational Therapist for a Thermoplastic Splint and this was arranged that day and I was on my way all set with my new split. The OT even arranged for a referral to Darwin Hospital for 5 weeks time so they can check how my wrist is going. I cannot believe the efficiency of all the staff I have dealt with 8n the two hospitals  and how lovely they all were to me during this stressful time.

Dear atlasfm78,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following your unfortunate injury. We are very pleased to hear that the care you received at both Port Hedland Hospital and Broome Health Campus met your needs so effectively during what was undoubtedly a very stressful and painful time.

It is especially encouraging to read about the professionalism, efficiency, and compassion shown by the staff involved in your care—from the emergency team who promptly assessed and treated your injury, to the nurses who ensured your comfort overnight, and the outpatient teams who supported your ongoing recovery. The coordinated efforts to arrange your follow-up care, including the splint and referral to Darwin Hospital, reflect a strong commitment to patient-centred care, even across geographically remote locations.

Your feedback is a valuable reminder of the importance of kindness, clear communication, and coordinated care in delivering high-quality healthcare services. We sincerely thank you for acknowledging the work of our teams.

We wish you all the best for your continued recovery and hope your wrist continues to heal well in the coming weeks.
