"Wait times"

About: Peel Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my child in for suspected pneumonia. They had to wait over 6 hours to be seen. They then had xrays and was told they were to expect another several hours for results. We ended up having to leave because my child was too exhausted to keep waiting in the waiting room. What's the point of having a hospital. What happens if my child deteriorates and goes into further respiratory distress? They will go back to the same hospital that didn't treat them in a timely manner? There was no urgent care open.

My child's coughing and breathing sounded horrible.  They have multiple comorbidities that can cause their health to deteriorate rapidly.  I believe the ed wait times are being falsified or are based on a walk out rate. 140 minutes compared to 6 hours... This hospital is absolutely disgusting in my opinion. The peel region needs another hospital. I believe it's been like this for over 20 years.  I feel they need to pick their act up.

Dear humanitiesmr57,

I apologise for the extended wait time you experienced at Peel Health Campus and the distress this experience has caused. You are correct that 6 hours awaiting care is much too long and longer than we would usually expect, particularly for an unwell child. I would kindly ask that you contact our Patient & Family Liaison Service at 9531 8177 (Monday to Friday 8.00am – 4.00pm), or via email at PHC.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au so we can explore this wait in more detail.

I hope your child is now recovering however if they are still unwell please consider seeking further medical treatment or returning to the Peel Health Campus Emergency Department. We also encourage patients and families to utilise the Aishwarya care phone in our hospital to escalate concerns if you feel that your child’s condition is deteriorating and staff have not responded to your concerns.

Kind regards.

Kellie Blyth
