After a freak accident at home on a Sunday afternoon, I ended up having to be taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital.
To be completely honest, my first thought was “Oh God not that place”
I had never been to Royal Perth Hospital but stories I’d heard on the news made me weary.
When we arrived I was brought through to triage and almost immediately was seen by a nurse named Brendan.
He was kind, funny and just what I needed in that moment. He was clearly highly skilled at his job and I felt very safe in his care.
I was then taken to a room where a DR came to see me. He again was made me feel at ease by being kind while at the same time as being very professional. (I’m sorry I can’t remember his name)
All the while alarms were going off but the team who was with me never made me feel like they were rushing through my care.
When I was admitted to a ward, every single nurse, doctor, anaesthetist, orderly, cleaner, hospital staff made me feel welcome and cared for.
On several occasions I witnessed staff being spoken to awfully and in every situation the staff remained calm and polite.
Upon my release from the ward, I was taken to the Transit Lounge to await medication and to be collected by my husband.
I was informed immediately that it could be a long wait as the pharmacy was very busy. However this was not a concern as I was given a comfy chair, a blanket and a coffee.
The nurses although very run off their feet continued to provide pain medication when required and were extremely attentive.
It is very clear that this hospital need a huge makeover in my opinion. It is an old building which looks very tired.
What doesn’t need a makeover is the staff. They are knowledgeable, kind, resilient and I am so so grateful to have been under their care for the 4 days I was there.
