"Severe infection"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my child into Wonthaggi Emergency Department. Due to pain in their sides, back and lower abdomin. Pain when passing urine. Fevers also. After waiting 4 hrs or more, we seen a doctor who then said they were ruling my child's symptoms out as they had an UTI. The doctor said they'd give us antibiotics and send us on our way. Felt quite rushed saying they were trying to fast track us. No bloods were done.

The doctor said they would have the urine sample sent off and I would hear back if there was any nasty bugs in the sample. Two days later my child was still in pain. Had fevers and had vomited. Had already had 6 antibiotic tablets by then so I called nurse on call and spoke to a virtual doctor and was advised to take my child back in. I was worried about doing so from what happened the first time. Made to feel like we were a waste of time.

Second time we went in the nurses done my child's OBS and they had a temperature and their heart rate was elevated. They then got admitted overnight. I was apologised too, the next day by another DR as the urine sample was never sent off. The DR seemed very annoyed and told me it wasn't good enough and they apologise. My child had antibiotic drips overnight and one the next day. My child had a severe infection.

Dear Virgojg54,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I’m very sorry to hear about the difficulties you and your child faced during your recent visits to the Wonthaggi Emergency Department. This is not the experience we want any patient or family to have, and we sincerely apologise for the distress that this has caused.

To help us look into what happened, I would be extremely grateful if you could call me on 0436 632 078 to discuss your experience further.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention and I hope your child is recovering well.

Kind regards,

Chris
