"Hip replacement"

About: Osborne Park Hospital Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as a service user),

About 2 months ago I fell and had a hip replacement as I broke my hip. I went to Charlie Gairdners —very good, except the TV. There was a fellow across from me, noisy TV, it went on and on all night.

Then I was transferred to Osborne Park Hospital and the neighbour only had a curtain separating us, was watching soccer, footy all through the night. I think there should be a ruling—8pm, turn the TV off. It was just horrible, really.

The upside—there was a staff member called Ahmad and he is the most marvellous person. What a lovely man, what a help he’s been, moral support. I said I can’t sleep given the noise and all the bright lights being on—I am a light sleeper—and I told him, and he gave me some eye protectors to wear. What a gesture of niceness. And if you could convey that to him.

Also, the food was wonderful. Everything was perfect except my neighbour, their TV, and the lights on. If they made some provision so that there were areas that were darker and quieter—the good outweighs the bad.

I’m vegan and the food was very, very good. My stay overall—I was very grateful. I wouldn’t have had it anywhere else.

Dear limapb87,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. I was sorry to hear of your lack of sleep due to the noise and light disturbance you experienced during your hospital stay at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Osborne Park Hospital.

I was pleased to hear that Ahmad was able to provide you with eye protectors to wear and I will ensure that I pass on your kind words of appreciation. I am so proud of our staff and delighted to hear that they went above and beyond to ensure they provided you with such high quality, patient centred care.

I will ensure that your feedback is used as an opportunity to remind staff of the importance of minimising disturbances at night for patients whenever possible. I would encourage you, for any future hospital admissions, to raise these concerns directly with the Clinical Nurse Specialist on the ward, as it is important to address these issues as soon as possible so we can try and reduce the disturbances.

Thank you for your positive feedback about your stay overall. It gives me great pleasure to be able to share it with the staff involved.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
