"Misdiagnosed"

About: Sale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My school aged child presented to the Sale Emergency via Ambulance and was diagnosed with Influenza A and Asthma, They were sent home heavily breathing.

Hours later they became disorientated, weak and then unresponsive and rushed to another regional hospital and then airlifted to a metropolitan hospital. My child was in Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). I understand they would have died if I didn’t make the 000 call. I believe if sale hospital had of kept them for observation or checked their blood sugars and ketones this would have been caught early. The metropolitan hospital have now diagnosed my child with Diabetes Type 1.

Dear AngryParent88,

We wish to sincerely apologise for the experience you have had and assure you that we take your concerns very seriously and remain committed to supporting your child’s care moving forward.

We acknowledge the distressing experience you and your family have encountered. Making a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes in a Paediatric patient can be inherently challenging, particularly when the initial presentation is complicated by concurrent illnesses such as Influenza A.

These overlapping clinical features can obscure the underlying condition, making timely diagnosis more difficult.

I would be happy to speak with you further about what occurred, and can assist you in facilitating ongoing care and coordination with our Paediatric Team if required.

I can be contacted at divyanshu.dua@cghs.com.au or on (03) 5143 8700.

Kind Regards

Dr Divyanshu Dua

Director Medical Services
