"Prince of Wales Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation HIIT Program"

About: POWH Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

(as a service user),

As an active 54-year-old involved in surf lifesaving rescue and IRB competition for the past 17 years, having a heart attack was the last thing I ever expected. It came as a massive shock. In November 2024, I underwent a double bypass (CABGx2), and to be honest, I had no idea what recovery would look like. I was grateful to have survived - but I was also unsure if I'd ever be back to where I was.

In January 2025, I began cardiac rehab at Prince of Wales Hospital. From day one, the staff were incredibly friendly, supportive, and deeply aware of how different everyone’s recovery journey is. A few sessions in, they offered me a spot in the HIIT program. I was hesitant. The thought of high-intensity exercise post-surgery was daunting, especially as I was still wrestling with doubts about what my future would look like.

But the team at POWH Cardiac Rehab were exceptional. Their constant monitoring, reassurance, and encouragement gave me the confidence I needed. I never felt rushed or pushed - only supported. Their careful attention to each patient, myself included, made me feel completely safe and in good hands.

The biggest benefit of the program wasn’t just physical - though my fitness definitely came back stronger than ever. What mattered most to me was the boost in confidence. I slowly started running, riding, and swimming again. That mental shift from "Will I ever get back to where I was?" to "I’m ready to go again" was everything.

Now, less than a year later, I’m back doing all my lifesaving and competition activities - and honestly, I feel better than before. My "pipes are clear", and I’ve learned a great deal about making healthier choices, thanks to the education sessions the team provided.

I truly can’t thank the staff enough. Every single one of them played a role in helping me return to the life I love. Their care, professionalism, and belief in me made all the difference.
