"Emergency department and admission"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Transit / Discharge Lounge

(as the patient),

I am writing to provide feedback regarding my recent experience at Charlie’s Emergency Department and subsequent admission recently.

After a weekend of rest, I presented to the Emergency Department at approximately 7:00 am with a sudden and severe onset of vertigo and vomiting, which had begun the previous night and persisted throughout the early morning hours. Upon arrival, I underwent an ECG, had bloods taken, and a cannula inserted. Following this, I was returned to the waiting room, where I remained for several hours before being admitted to the Observation Ward.

Unfortunately, I spent nearly three hours in the Observation Ward without being seen by either a nurse or a doctor. During this time, my cannula became increasingly inflamed and painful, causing significant distress. I was also experiencing extreme dehydration and had not eaten since the previous afternoon due to persistent vomiting. Overwhelmed by pain, fatigue, and frustration, I finally rang the nurse’s bell in tears, at which point a nurse responded. It was only after this interaction that a doctor was contacted and arrangements were made for a CTA scan.

Following the scan, I was transferred to the Transit Ward, a space described as a transitional unit for patients awaiting ward beds. From the moment I arrived in the Transit Ward, the level of care improved significantly. I was treated with genuine compassion and professionalism, which made a tremendous difference during a time of extreme vulnerability and anxiety.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and recognition to Nurses Sam, Mary, Betty, Sandra, and Rachel, who each demonstrated exceptional kindness, attentiveness, and empathy. Their care made a meaningful impact and provided much needed reassurance and comfort during a very stressful experience.

While my time in the ED and Observation Ward was distressing and I think it could benefit from review, the exemplary care I received in the Transit Ward deserves commendation. Thank you for taking the time to consider my feedback.

Dear Meekitty,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback about your recent visit to the Emergency Department (ED) at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. I was sorry to read that your experience was not a positive one and that you felt frustrated and distressed with waiting times and delays to your ongoing care and investigations.

This is not the experience that our team aim to provide. Our ED team are a team who strive for continuous improvement, and they will take your feedback seriously to help them improve. It is our hope that we provide a far more positive experience for you should you need to attend the Emergency Department again in the future.

Thank you for acknowledging the staff in the Transit Ward for their exemplary care. I will ensure that your kind words of appreciation are passed on to Nurses Sam, Mary, Betty, Sandra, and Rachel, together with mine.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
