Recently I attended Bentley Hospital for a flexible sigmoidoscopy under IV sedation.
Before the procedure, my condition and skin were checked by staff, and I was administered an enema by a nurse — no injuries were present.
When I awoke from sedation, I immediately felt severe pain in my upper right inner thigh, next to the vulva. I asked for pain relief but was refused, being told it was “normal.” No mention of an injury was made in my post-procedure notes.
The pain worsened significantly on my journey home. By 3:00 pm I discovered a large, golf ball–sized lump in the area, which later developed into a severe bruise. That evening at 7:53 I phoned Health Direct for advice and was told to attend the Emergency Department.
Five days after the procedure, my GP diagnosed a hematoma. I have been unable to walk, sit, or function normally for days. This injury has caused extreme physical pain, anxiety, and distress, especially given the personal location and the fact I have aggressive endometriosis, which compounds the trauma.
I have submitted a formal complaint to Bentley and Royal Perth Hospitals requesting a full investigation, an explanation for why I was not informed of the injury, and to no longer receive treatment from the doctor involved.
I share this story to raise awareness that unexpected injuries can occur during procedures under sedation, and that open, clear communication from medical staff is essential for patient trust and safety.
