"Lack of care"

About: Albany Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as a carer),

I came into see my grandparent in the surgical ward and they had tablets sitting there that they had not taken which were administered by the nurse that my grandparent had not taken. They had not had any pain medication since the morning according to their chart. I feel that this is completely negligent and I want this looked into.

I was told in the morning when we visited mid-morning that my grandparent would be showered. They still had not had a shower. They had spilled their coffee on themself before I left just before midday and my grandparent was still sitting in the same position 5 hours later.

My grandparent also had not had the Venapress IPCS on at all, all day long they has had not TEDS on either. Their Oedema is terrible normally and will only deteriorate if the appropriate care is not given that I believe they should be entitled to.

The Nurse manager came in once I had raised my concerns of my grandparent's care, I recall they were very apologetic but I believe this should not happen. When is medication seemingly not be a priority for a patient let alone person hygiene especially considering my grandparent has alzheimers.

Dear importerjb94

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. We have shared it with the Albany Health Campus’s leadership team as well as the Surgical Ward Clinical Nurse Manager.

As you have indicated in your post, you have met with the Surgical Ward CNM. We acknowledge that your grandparent did experience a delay in receiving their medication and the key principles of safe and effective medication administration has been discussed with the nurse looking after your grandparent and with the surgical ward team at their daily safety huddle.

I understand that your grandparent was showered today after you spoke to the CNM. Personal hygiene is important to us and I am sorry that there was a delay in showering your grandparent.

I would encourage you to continue to talk directly to the team looking after your grandparent. However, if you believe that your grandparent is deteriorating and that your concerns are not being addressed, I would encourage you to make an Aishwarya’s CARE Call. Aishwarya’s CARE Call provides patients, their families a way to receive or call for assistance when they feel that the healthcare team has not fully recognised the patient's changing health condition. The phone number in the Great Southern is 1800 975 335.

I hope that your grandparent is fully recovered from their surgery soon.

Albany Health Campus Director
