"Virtual physio may have saved my life"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / Campus Centre 2 - Adult Outpatient Department (AOPD)

(as the patient),

I broke my ankle, received immediate care and was sent home with a moonboot and crutches. I was a complete crutches novice so after a day or so of slouching and hanging my full weight on these two sticks, my whole body was aching, not just my ankle! As a result, I likely limited my body and ankle movement to minimise the pain. The moonboot was also increasingly excruciating and hurting my foot, and not just where it was broken. Little did I know what was to come…

It was 5 days later that I had a virtual appointment with a physiotherapist from the Virtual Fracture Service at Prince of Wales. I was curious and perhaps a little dubious at first at how effective a virtual appointment for a physical ailment could be.

Meghan was thorough and patient even as I burst into tears at how much pain I was in. By this stage it felt like my whole leg was throbbing which I put down to my new “boot” and the way I now had to move about gingerly (let alone try to shower on one leg). Over video/zoom Meghan inspected my foot & leg, compared to the other, asked me to feel various parts and at the end of our consultation concluded that she suspected I may have a blood clot. She asked me to attend the hospital as soon as I could.

Meghan was right. I did have a blood clot, and not just one so I was immediately put on blood thinners at the hospital.

Meghan may have saved my life. Thank you Meghan for your care and skill!

Dear Ankleina Jolie,

Thank you for providing such positive feedback about your experience with the Physiotherapy Department at Prince of Wales Hospital, particularly the Virtual Fracture Clinic. Meghan works hard to support patients in our new Virtual Fracture Service and we appreciate your acknowledgement of the care and skill provided.

I have shared your appreciation with the Physiotherapy Team and will ensure Meghan takes the time to read your kind words of appreciation.

Thank you again for sharing your experience.

Elizabeth Browne
