"Poor standard of care"

About: Exmouth Health Service / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

My partner had a significant blow to their head which resulted in loss of consciousness for a period of between 3 to 5 minutes.

They attended the emergency department via ambulance was assessed by the nurses with no medical follow up and sent home within the hour.

My partner had significant swelling to their left temporal lobe face and neck.  They were clearly suffering from this injury for at least 5 days.

Subsequent presentations to the hospital did not refer my partner for any scans, even though they were clearly compromised in normal day to day activities.

Our concerns were left unheard despite presenting twice more for some reassurance.

We felt that the care was substandard and at the very least the Doctor on call should have attended to review my partner.

What is the protocol for observations for post head injury which had a period of loss of consciousness?

This caused us a a lot of concern regarding lack of care.

Dear Doechi420

Thank you for reaching out on Care Opinion and sharing your concerns.

I was certainly troubled to read your recollections of the events and can understand why you believe there was not enough monitoring of your partner’s injuries. You are correct that there are documented protocols for head injuries and patient monitoring that should occur, I shall ensure the Exmouth Director of Nursing discusses this with their team and ensure that there is complete understanding of what should be occurring.

I would very much like to coordinate a thorough investigation into your concerns. Given the anonymity of Care Opinion this would require you and your partner to contact me so I can obtain some additional information and consent. From there an investigation can proceed and I can share our findings with you once completed. My name is Michael Barry, I am the Acting Gascoyne Operations Manager. I can be contacted either on 9941 0301 or wachs-midwest.gascoyneoperationsmanager@health.wa.gov.au

I hope your partner is feeling better and I do hope to hear from you both soon.

Regards

Michael Barry
