"A Nurse Who's More Than a Nurse"

My husband had his glaucoma stent and cataract procedures done at the Sydney Eye Hospital a few days ago.  

Any surgical procedure is enough to make anyone anxious, and my husband is one of them - he's never comfortable with needles.  He won't admit it, but I know he was nervous.    

The nurse who performed the pre-op and post-op checks on my husband was Diana L.  Diana was so kind and gentle as she went about the routine of reviewing my husband's medical history, current medication, filling up the paperwork, checking his vital signs.  Diana's calm demeanour visibly relaxed my husband, to the point that he was even exchanging jokes with her as the interview progressed. 

Diana was also the one who explained the post-op care to my husband.  At one point during the post-op interview, my husband inadvertently stated contradictory statements about the medications he's taking.  Perhaps it's because his brain is still fuzzy from the local anasthaesia, and Diana understood that.  Diana dealt with the situation professionally, and patiently talked my husband through the process until everything was clarified.  There was no sign of impatience on her part at all.  

It was a very busy day - the Patients Lounge was full of waiting patients and carers - and all the nurses and staff were run off their feet.  I'm mindful of how exhausting the job of a nurse is and it's so easy to show impatience - they're human, after all.  So I give my hats off to Diana for being so kind and understanding with my husband and showing that nurses do care for their patients.
