"Incorrect Advice"

About: Peel Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I went to Peel Health Campus Emergency because I hurt my knee and couldn't walk. I wanted to check there were no fractures but also get advice on what to do. I was fine waiting the 5.5 hours because it wasn't an urgent emergency.

The clerical and triage staff were really helpful along with the staff directing me through each step. The junior doctor was really nice and did a thorough assessment, she said she thought there might of been a dislocation but she needed to check with the senior doctor. I was sent for an X-Ray.

The senior doctor came up to me and I felt they came across as really condescending. I recall they said there was nothing wrong with my X-Ray, made me walk without crutches (even though I had told the staff that I was in a lot of pain and couldn't bend my leg straight so I couldn't walk).

I recall they then said that I shouldn't be on crutches, that there was nothing underlying going on and I'd be fine. I was surprised when they were adamant I would be fine to go to work (I am a nurse), I had to really advocate for a med cert for the following day because it was already 8PM and I still couldn't walk.

I went to a GP the next day because I had a feeling something wasn't right, I recall the GP was shocked that ED didn't give me any compression or any advice to apply cold/heat, rest or elevate and to follow up with GP. They were mainly concerned that the second doctor had told me to stop using crutches and walk with my injury, the GP said that has likely made it worse. They gave me at least a week off work and has followed up with an ultrasound and possibly a MRI.

I get that it wasn't an Emergency, but I was there because I was concerned it was. I feel it would have be great for them to at least tell me to follow up with a GP and give me something for compression because I believe there are a lot of people that would have just trusted what the doctor said.

Dear lupuszq65,

I extend my sincere apologies for your recent experience whilst in the Peel Health Campus Emergency Department, and any distress this experience has caused you. This is certainly not the standard of care we aim to provide to our patients.

In regard to the treatment you received from our senior doctor it saddens me to hear you felt dismissed during a time you were seeking medical advice. We would like to investigate this further. To do this, I would kindly ask that you contact our Patient & Family Liaison Service at 9531 8177 (Monday to Friday 8:00am-4:00pm), or via email at PHC.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au.

A thorough investigation would allow us to personally address your concerns but also possibly identify areas of improvement for our services.

Kind Regards,

Renee Gourgaud

Acting Executive Director

Peel Health Campus
