"Pre existing condition - not being heard"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a staff member),

I'm writing about my visit to the emergency department late last year for a minor complaint. As an employee and patient with a pre-existing condition, I felt the clinical staff's repeated questioning about my condition was intrusive and unnecessary. After I initially disclosed my condition, further questioning seemed unnecessary and potentially driven by my employer. This experience left me feeling distressed and I'd appreciate discussing ways to improve this process.

Dear matarer98,

I’m truly sorry to hear about the distress you experienced during your visit to the Emergency Department (ED) at Fiona Stanley Hospital. I understand this can be an incredibly anxious time for both patients and their families, and I deeply regret that your experience added to that stress.

I understand that the repetitive questioning can feel overwhelming and intrusive. Please know that our ED team follows a clinically informed triage process to ensure patients with the most urgent needs are prioritised. Additionally, this helps us determine the most appropriate pathway for treatment and management of our patients. Whilst at times this does require repeating of information, it also ensures that our team are utilising information that is accurate and reflective at the time of consultation.

As Care Opinion is an anonymous platform and we’re unable to investigate further without additional details. I would encourage you to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service at (08) 6152 4013 during business hours or email us at FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au. This will allow us to look into your concerns more thoroughly and provide a more tailored response.

At Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG), we take great pride in the high standard of care our staff provide. Feedback like yours is invaluable in helping us continue to deliver the best possible care to our patients.

Kind Regards

Luke Dix

Acting Executive Director
