"ED not calling with results"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my toddler to ED last week after being sent in by their GP for breathing issues. My child was triaged and we didn't have to wait long. After monitoring for a while, they were sent for a chest xray which the Dr said came back clear for pneumonia. Then they were was swabbed for viruses. The dr explained they would call if any results were positive and we were ok to go home.

A week later my child was still unwell and coughing badly. I saw the GP again who said their chest xray report stated they had a chest infection but the most concerning was their swab results showed they had three viruses including RSV.

I understand ED staff are extremely busy, however, I believe if you tell a parent you will call with any positive result you should especially for a toddler with breathing issues.

Dear Emergency,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience in our Emergency Department. I’m very sorry to hear about the ongoing illness your child has experienced, and I understand how concerning this must have been for you, especially after being reassured that you would be contacted if any positive results were found.

We take all feedback seriously as it helps us to improve the care we provide. We would like to look into this episode of care in more detail to understand what happened and where we could improve. If you would be willing, I would encourage you to get in touch with our Consumer Liaison Officer, who can support you in raising your concerns formally and ensure this is looked into thoroughly.

Please contact us on 97 221521 and ask to speak to Debbie our Consumer Liaison Officer, who will be happy to help.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide this feedback.

Kate Kelly Acting Service Co-Director BRH
