"Lack of privacy during blood collection"

About: Maldon Hospital

(as a service user),

There is a pathology collection service once a week at Maldon Hospital. I needed to have blood taken and organised to go there. I was very unwell, and barely able to walk, let alone speak.

I went in, sat down, and was wondering why the nurse had not shut the door. I kept trying to look at my family member but they are frightened of speaking up and was avoiding my eye.

There is a person who works in the hospital buildings who I know to be rude and aggressive. As they are not connected to pathology, I ventured to go there, thinking I would not be anywhere near them.

To my horror, as I was having my sample taken, they walked right into the room, did something with some papers, and looked me up and down.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, two other people in the waiting area began to have a loud, and what I found to be unsuitable conversation, in booming voices that I felt I was forced to listen to.

I believe that people having blood collection and other pathology taken at the hospital should have privacy. I have never been to a pathology collection where a door was left open. Even in a hospital ward the nurse would draw the curtain in my experience.
