Liverpool Hospital (LH) review
As a human race we are used to complaining about pretty much everything; So on this occasion I would like to offer a review about the surgeons, their team and the theatre nursing staff at LH.
In April of this year 2025 I had to attend (LH) to continue with the second session of five stent surgeries to the arteries around my heart. I had previously had a couple of stents installed a couple of months earlier, so was quite familiar with the procedure. Of the three arteries that were still blocked, one was blocked at 100%, and the other two were at 50% and 60% respectively. So, pretty dangerous and I knew this because of the way I felt on occasion.
Once checked in and ready for surgery I was escorted into the theatre by friendly staff and then met some of the team who were going to work on me. They were also a pleasure to meet. They joked and made me feel calm, as I was a bit anxious about the whole thing. You see the problem was that my father had died on the table whilst undergoing procedures to his heart, albeit in another country and some years ago. Nevertheless, I was affected by those events.
For those who don’t know, you remain fully conscious during the stent procedure but obviously under local anesthetic. While on the table and just before the procedure I started to think about my father and his misfortune under surgery. This brought a tear to my eye which I tried not to show. One of the senior nurses spotted that I was a bit upset and started to talk to me. She asked if I was okay and why so upset. I explained to her about my father and her response was to hold my hand and try to console me. She asked what my fathers name was and I told her. I was named after him so carried the same name. With pride she said, wow, he named you after him, he must have been very proud. This got me thinking about good things and not necessarily worrying about his fate. The conversation went on for a while and completely turned my thoughts around. I can only describe her as an Angel, and believe that her attitude went far beyond her duty and remain convinced that she was in the perfect profession for her character. Thank you for your concern and empathy.
Now the surgeons had a pretty hard job because they told me that my condition was ‘complicated’. I was in theatre for about 4½ hours and their professionalism didn’t wane for one second, on the other hand they approached their work with the freshness that they started out with. They even had the time to answer some of my queries and kept me informed throughout. Did I call them surgeons? No I must have been mistaken, they were professional miracle workers. At the end of the procedure the main surgeon told me that he was very pleased with the way the surgery had gone, and very proudly informed me that the artery that was 100% blocked was now at only 1%, and the other two were completely clear.
Recovery was pretty quick and the surgical team came to see me at my bedside to check that everything was okay. Although I thanked them there, I didn’t realise how grateful I really was until a few months later. Hence the reason for this review.
One day I noticed that I wasn’t feeling the tightness and pain in my chest area anymore, in fact I felt ‘normal’ again. But because of this normal feeling, you tend to forget how bad you actually were.
So the reason for this is to thank the surgical team, the theatre nurses, especially my visiting angel, and the facility for their very professional approach and care. We are truly fortunate to be in the hands of some of these extraordinary professionals.
A very heart felt (excuse the pun ☺) Thank you to all at LH!
