"Birth Trauma"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I gave birth to my baby unplanned spontaneously last year and still very traumatised from the treatment, the birth and the post natal complications I suffered and am suffering.

I was a planned CS, my water broke before the scheduled CS. Went to the hospital and gave birth to my baby after 5 hrs of waiting for CS.

The stages of my birth were very fast as one of the midwife did a membrane sweep, I feel this is not a speculation, i already confirmed it with a midwife what I felt was in fact a stretch and sweep. But the midwife denied doing it.

I was told there were 2 CS ahead of me but it was never my turn for cs. I was considered high risk too with previous several degree tears and warning from obs not to have vaginal birth. I told the doctors and midwife during my visits which they acknowledged. But for some reason when I arrived at the hospital after my water broke, instead me being an emergency cs I was made to give birth to my baby.

During a debrief which I requested, I feel a co-ordinator lied to me by saying there were emergencies and since they only have 2OT, they couldn’t fit me in. It seems there were no emergencies and they have more OT than just 2 which I found out later. And also, I found out that if they couldn’t fit me into their schedule they supposedly have an option to transfer me to another hospital which I was never informed of.

Not only that my episiotomy got infected a week after and my kidney a week after that which developed into sepsis. Which by the way a doctor came to see me who I believe was a senior staff member, they asked me if I ever had UTI and I said yes. I had it a few year ago and they just said it could be from that. In my opinion, that's impossible.

Based on my experience, I would never give birth again at KEMH. Not only did I feel assaulted (the membrane sweep without my consent and, I believe, fabricating the notes), I felt gaslit and lied to. The worse experience I have experienced.

Dear whisperyqi86,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out and share what has clearly been a very upsetting and traumatic experience for you. I was particularly saddened to read about the poor communication you experienced during and after the birth of your baby, and I hope you can accept my apologies for any distress that has been caused.

As you are aware, Care Opinion is an anonymous platform but I would value the opportunity to address your concerns directly, particularly, but not limited to: consent and your post-natal complications and also to review your medical record and the work environment in theatres the day you gave birth. If you feel you could contact our Consumer Liaison Service via WNHSCLS@health.wa.gov.au, or call (08) 6458 1444, so we can liaise with you, we could make arrangements to have the issues you have raised fully investigated by senior staff.

Once again, I am so sorry to hear of your experience and I hope we hear from you soon.

Kind regards

Jeffrey Williams,
Executive Director
Women and Newborn Health Service
