"Children’s ward"

About: Albany Health Campus / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

I was in for a 2 night stay with my infant (a few months old) who was almost severely dehydrated and not drinking as much as they should have been. The first night was great, had an amazing young nurse over night who was really helpful.

The second evening just as I was getting my baby ready for bed they were very upset, crying and screaming just the tiniest bit. As a baby does (tired and still sore in the tummy). The nurse who was on that evening shift walked in the room as my partner was about to leave and asked why my baby is unhappy and why they are crying so much, so rudely I felt. I said they're probably just tired and might need to poo a little. Mind you the paediatrician said my baby wasn’t constipated or backed up.

This nurse says to me they'll get a suppository… I said no thank you they don't need that. Then they nurse came over to grab my baby out of my hands to try and do bicycle legs (which I’d already done prior) and I told the nurse this. They say again, so you want the suppository. Once again I’ve said no, my baby doesn’t need it. I just thought it was odd the first thing the nurse offered was a suppository for my baby who I believe clearly didn’t need one.

I’d feel for a first time mum who was unsure of what to do and took the nurses offer.

But with the first rude remarks of why is my baby crying so much, just took me back, since we were on a children’s ward. Unsure if babies are allowed to cry on the children's ward.

Can’t fault the overnight nurse we had both nights, or the 3 paediatricians we saw. All amazing!

Just taken back by the nurse who made me feel a bit uneasy.

This was about 8:30pm on a Friday night.

Dear shudderhh63,

Thank you for sharing your experience — it sounds like a tough time, and you handled it with such care and calm. I’m really glad to hear the overnight nurse and paediatricians were so supportive.

I’m sorry the interaction with the evening nurse left you feeling uneasy. Babies cry, especially when they’re unwell, and your instincts as a parent were absolutely valid. It’s important that your choices are respected, and I can understand how that moment felt confronting.

We will share your story with the team and ensure that they understand the potential impact of our actions and communications on individuals and families in our care.

Consumer feedback is the best way of learning so we can improve the experience of consumers within our services.

Kind regards
