"Family and Domestic Violence"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I have visited Royal Perth this week. In one circumstance, I noticed “Family and Domestic Violence” posters in ER.

Unfortunately, on mentioning this was happening to me /privacy complaints, I felt dismissed. They appeared more focussed on their forms and stared blankly at me.

I waited until they finished their last test and walked out, too concerned after complaining about the privacy complaint.

Unfortunately, I have encountered this scenario many times in this hospital. It’s very dangerous for those experiencing FDV.

Dear FDVSurvivor,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I sincerely apologise for the distress you felt and for the way you felt dismissed during your visit to the Royal Perth Hospital Emergency Department.

I am deeply concerned that you were not met with the compassion, attentiveness, and privacy you deserved especially when disclosing something as serious and sensitive as Family and Domestic Violence (FDV).

Your feedback highlights a need for improvement in how we care for patients experiencing FDV. I have shared your concerns with the relevant teams so that meaningful changes can be made. Our staff are trained appropriately to respond to such situations, and I want to sincerely apologise that this was not reflected in your experience.

As you have mentioned that you have encountered similar issues many times at Royal Perth Hospital, I would very warmly welcome contact from you to our Patient Experience Department at rpbg.feedback@health.wa.gov.au or by calling 08 9224 1637, if you feel safe to do so. I would be keen to hear more about where our care has not met your expectations, and what you think we could do better, as well as making sure that we follow-up with any support we can offer you if you need it for your personal circumstances.

Kind Regards

Ben Noteboom
