"Exceptional Care"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

It’s been a few months since I gave birth, and I still smile every time I think about the experience.

I’m incredibly proud to have birthed at KEMH — the care I received was nothing short of extraordinary.

Kim cared for me overnight, and she was truly a miracle worker. An exceptional midwife — knowledgeable, respectful, and patient — she was exactly what I needed during such a vulnerable time.

Lauren from LBS was the midwife assigned to me the morning I gave birth, and she remained by my side throughout. She was also patient, respectful, and kind. I felt so safe in her care. She listened deeply to both myself and my partner, and I will be forever grateful for the support and compassion she provided.

Also of note, Gemma and Mandy were there during my birth as well. They were both incredibly supportive and contributed so much to making me feel calm and cared for during labour. I truly appreciated their presence and kindness.

I’d also like to mention Jade, who cared for me during an MFAU assessment. She was exactly the right person for me at that moment — calm, supportive, and reassuring.

Dr. Sonia delivered our daughter, and she was so respectful and patient with my wishes. Sonia is a fabulous doctor — highly skilled and compassionate — and truly an asset to KEMH.

The only disappointing part of my pregnancy experience was having to wait over four hours for a telehealth appointment. After two follow-up phone calls, I was finally seen, but the delay felt unnecessary and quite time-consuming. I believe this aspect of care could be improved. (For clarity, this was not an appointment with Dr. Shin Lee.)

Speaking of Dr. Shin — I was fortunate to be seen by her a few times during my pregnancy. She made both myself and my partner feel so empowered. She is truly a magician, and I can’t thank her enough for the incredible care she provided.

I truly hope this message finds its way to everyone mentioned. Each of you played a special role in one of the most important moments of my life, and I am endlessly grateful

Dear reticulumiue85,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you for reaching out to share your experience at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH). I am so pleased to hear about the exceptional maternity care you received. I loved reading about how well supported and listened to you were by the midwives caring for you and how empowered and respected Dr Sonia and Dr Shin both made you feel.

I will be sure to pass on your kind words of appreciation to Kim, Lauren, Gemma, Mandy and Jade as well as Dr Sonia and Dr Shin, I am sure they will all be delighted to know how much their care meant to you and your partner.

It is disappointing to hear about the extended waiting time for your telehealth appointment you experienced. Waiting 4 hours is an unacceptable length of time and I hope you can accept my apologies for the frustration and inconvenience this would have caused. As a health service we recognise how long waiting times can contribute to a negative patient experience and currently have an outpatient reform project underway which aims to address the issues you have identified.

Wishing you all the best,

Rebecca
