"Staff handover"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child presented recently for their bowel obstruction at 9am. They were not given any treating medication until 4pm, 7hrs after presentation totally unacceptable in my opinion. It took the paediatric team to hasten their treatment - why??? My child was finally hooked up after I had put their NGT myself at 8am at home! At the time of writing this, we were still in the emergency department after what I believe to be so many failures by the afternoon shift.

The RN then said my child was nil by mouth when they weren’t. I had to ask a friend from Denmark to come and bring my child food which I had to purchase (private patient you guys get money for that!!). My child is on medication which suppresses their diet and then to not get any food is disgraceful completely in my opinion. To say to an child old who had not eaten since 11:30pm the night before oh hey here’s a sandwich is, I feel, unacceptable I asked at 5;50pm oh where’s my child's food to be told they are Nil by mouth.

My child is also a private patient so seriously what is with your hospital. I sat all day in a chair that has rust and exposed foam we are not seriously that run down honestly. I will be putting a separate complaint in about what I believe to be the disgusting hygiene of Albany hospital.

Connie the night nurse has rectified all of this but this had been hours on end and not acceptable for any standard within an Australian hospital surely. I would not accept this in my home let alone a hospital that is suppose to uphold some Kind of hygiene and cleanliness. Surely I would have thought there were standards and an occupational health and safety guidelines for not only patients but staff. I want an explanation. My child deserves a fair treatment in an Australian hospital. I do t want special treatment but a fair and just and clean environment not Just for My child but for the staff.

It seems Albany is “rural” apparently so we just don’t care about standards. My child has survived cancer and I will not accept anything less than basic standard.  The only nurses Amanda and Connie listened and advocated appropriately for my child, advocating for them and their minimal needs. Surely my child has a right to be treated fairly and respectfully in the Western Australian health system? I feel very discriminated against as an Australian in my own Country with this heath system as it is. Why are the minimum standards of a chair with exposed foam and rust acceptable in anywhere. Is this not a breading ground for disease?

Dear importerjb94,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m truly sorry for the distress you and your child endured during your visit. The delays in care, miscommunication around dietary needs, and the condition of the facilities you described are deeply concerning and fall short of the standards we aim to uphold.

Your child’s history and needs should have been met with timely, respectful, and coordinated care. I understand how frustrating and exhausting it must have been to advocate so strongly for what should be basic support. I also appreciate you recognising the staff who did step up—Amanda and Connie—and I’ll ensure their efforts are acknowledged.

Your feedback will be escalated to the appropriate teams for review. We are committed to improving the quality, safety, and dignity of care for all patients and families, regardless of location or funding status.

Kind regards

Kate Hambleton
