"Privacy breach"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I delivered my first baby this year and also am a midwife at KEMH. Unfortunately I had incidences of my colleagues sharing my private information while I was in labour. First my CTG was being viewed by colleagues who were telling other staff I was in labour….

I then had a ‘friend’ and colleague sharing my information with a friend of ours who is not employed at KEMH. Private information about my labour and birth were shared and even the surprise gender of my baby. I am beyond disappointed in the staff and believe if I was to report this nothing would happen anyway which is why I haven’t….

Dear Midwife A,

I am terribly sorry to read about your recent birth experience at King Edward Memorial Hospital. All staff are bound by patient confidentiality requirements, and I am very concerned to hear about the information breaches you describe in your post. I’m also saddened to hear that, as a member of staff, you felt unable to share your concerns.

If you are comfortable to do so, I’d be grateful if you could reach out to me directly using the contact details provided to you by the Care Opinion team. I will ensure your concerns are reviewed through the appropriate processes. I would like to offer you my personal commitment to upholding your confidentiality as both a patient and member of our team.

I hope you and your baby are doing well.

Best wishes,

Jeffrey
