"My injured close relative"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I am writing this in pure desperation, as a concerned and stressed parent.

Seven weeks ago, my relative had a serious fall onto a concrete surface, while at work on. They spent 6 hours in ED having various treatments and assessments, checking their head injury and their spine. They were well cared for, they told me. Amazingly, no fractures or other serious issues were found, and they were discharged home.

Since then, my relative began experiencing sciatic pain on their left side, from their buttocks right into their ankle and foot, mostly in the left calf muscle.

To make this as brief as I can, their pain has become so excruciating that they can barely function on a daily level - no amount of NSAID's and Opioids have addressed their pain, which has now shown on an MRI as coming from a Herniated disc. My relative cannot sit, stand, even walking no longer eases the pain. I fear for them. As a parent, I am very worried.

They have attended ED on several occasions, I have driven them there and they even took an ambulance once, but has been turned away, politely telling them that nothing can be done for them in ED - 'sorry, we can't help you.'

My relative is now reluctant to return to ED, despite feeling much worse.

Why has my relative not been admitted, even just for 24 hours at least, to observe them and see the pain they are in? Is it lack of beds? I know you have many wonderful, compassionate doctors, nurses and staff in ED, as I have experienced it first hand. This situation with my relative, is breaking my heart, to see them - this vibrant, happy, hard-working young person and parent of a beautiful child - continue in this unbearable pain. I feel so helpless.

Thank you for listening.

Dear VikingPatient,

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We’re sorry to hear about your relative’s ongoing pain and the distress this has caused your family. While we’re glad they received initial care in ED, we understand how frustrating it must be to not see improvement.

Emergency Departments focus on acute, life-threatening conditions, and while your relative’s pain is severe, it may require specialist care outside the ED setting. We encourage follow-up with a GP for referral to specialist services or pain specialist to explore further treatment options.

Your feedback has been shared with the relevant teams, and we appreciate your advocacy.

Should you wish to discuss this further our Director of Medical Services on 9892 2629 would welcome your call.

Kind regards

Jenny Thompson

Director, Albany Health Campus

WACHS Great Southern
