"A recent admission to the hospital"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as a relative),

My spouse had vascular surgery last month at Bunbury Regional Hospital. They were discharged four days after surgery.

My spouse was breathless when discharged and got worse over the week. I took them to MRH ED and they were sent up to BHC for a CT scan which showed a pulmonary embolism. This I know is a complication of surgery but wasn’t picked up in Bunbury.

They also sustained a nerve injury in their R arm due to the blood pressure cuff being too low down the arm in the cubital fossa, which caused excruciating pain landing them in MRH ED again. They were told this will take a long time to repair. They did at the time bring this to the nurse’s  attention saying the cuff was too low. They were told it was fine and when they woke after the operation the pain in their arm was excruciating.

We just want this brought to your attention so it doesn’t happen to someone else. I am a nurse myself and am disappointed at the lack of nursing care provided, maybe some staff need extra training on how to apply the B/P cuff and where on the arm. This injury has caused my spouse more grief than the operation itself and has slowed their recovery. They are unable to put any pressure on the arm and it is their dominant side.

On discharge they were not given any pain relief to take home or script and no discharge summary was given.

Dear sextanscr73,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience regarding your spouse’s recent hospital stay.

I am so sorry to hear about what happened to your spouse and how they have been left feeling after their surgery. I am very concerned to learn that they are experiencing more anguish from the blood pressure cuff injury than from the operation itself.

I want you to know that we are taking your feedback very seriously and would appreciate the opportunity understand more about what happened and how we can support your spouse. I am particularly keen to ensure that your spouse has the pain relief they need and a discharge summary. If you are happy to contact us, please do this by calling: 08 9753 6537.

We are working with our teams to improve how we respond to concerns raised by our patients and families to ensure that everyone feels listened to and supported when issues are raised. We are also continuing to provide regular education sessions for our Surgical ward staff to reinforce the importance of delivering timely, effective, and safe care. Your feedback plays a vital role in helping us learn and improve the services we provide to our community.

I do hope to hear from you so we can support your spouse in their ongoing recovery.

Yours sincerely

Danaye Pascoe
