"Incredible Pregnancy/Birth/Midwife (MGP) Experience"

Powerhouse Angels — The Midwives of Broome Hospital

If I had to describe the midwives at Broome Hospital in one phrase, it would be Powerhouse Angels.

As a first-time mum, I had my baby in Broome and signed up early with the Maternity Group Practice (MGP) program. From the very beginning, right through to the birth and the postnatal period, I was supported beyond what I ever imagined. The level of care, compassion, and professionalism from the entire MGP team I saw was truly exceptional — an experience that exceeded every expectation.

From the first appointment, I was amazed by how much support and how many resources were available. The frequent check-ups, approachable communication, and access to education made me feel reassured and confident throughout my pregnancy. The program included both online and in-person antenatal classes, which were absolutely invaluable in helping me prepare for birth and early motherhood.

The in-person classes were one of my favourite parts of the journey. They were expertly taught by Georgie, another incredible MGP midwife — an exceptional, experienced educator with such a calm, knowledgeable presence. Georgie’s classes were not only deeply informative but also engaging and reassuring. Her ability to simplify complex topics and answer every question with patience and warmth made me feel genuinely prepared for labour and the realities of early motherhood.

Beyond the education, these classes provided something just as important — connection. Through them, I met other parents who were expecting around the same time, and we’ve continued to support one another after birth. These friendships have become a wonderful source of encouragement and community, and I know our babies will grow up attending things like Rhyme Time together.

The knowledge and guidance I gained through the MGP team gave me the confidence to approach my labour with clarity and calm. I understood my options, knew how to advocate for myself, and felt empowered to create the birth experience I had envisioned — all thanks to the preparation, education, and reassurance from the midwives.

My assigned MGP midwife was Jo — an incredibly experienced, professional, and nurturing woman. She made me feel safe, informed, and respected every step of the way. I also had the privilege of being paired with a student midwife, Carrie, and I can’t recommend this enough to other expecting mums. Carrie was compassionate, attentive, and brought such beautiful energy and commitment to her role.

Over the nine months, through appointments and classes, I also met many of the other MGP midwives, which gave me complete confidence that no matter who was on duty when my labour began, I would be in the very best of hands.

When the time came for birth, Jo wasn’t able to attend for valid reasons (and I know she truly wished she could have been there), but I was surrounded by an incredible team: Yvonne, another outstanding MGP midwife, along with Carrie and Steph. Together, they created an atmosphere of calm, safety, and strength. They guided me through every stage with care and reassurance, and because of them, I had the birth I had hoped for — natural, empowering, and full of gratitude.

The support didn’t end there. The six weeks of home visits following birth have been an absolute blessing. Having midwives visit, answer questions, and offer guidance during those early, emotional weeks made all the difference. I’ve never once felt alone, unsure, or without support as I’ve learned to care for my baby.

What makes the MGP program so special is its holistic approach. It’s not just about medical care — it’s emotional, physical, and mental support all wrapped together. Every step of the way, I felt genuinely cared for as both a mother and a person.

When I first found out I was pregnant, family and friends from Perth encouraged me to return there for the birth. But after my experience with the Broome MGP program, I can confidently say that if I’m ever lucky enough to have another baby, I’ll be doing everything I can to make sure it’s here in Broome, surrounded by this phenomenal team.

To the MGP midwives, the doctors, and the entire Broome Hospital team — thank you from the bottom of my heart for a truly 10/10 experience. You gave me confidence, knowledge, and unwavering support during one of the most transformative times of my life.

This journey will forever be etched in my memory, along with the deepest gratitude for every midwife, student, and healthcare professional who played a part in it. You are all extraordinary, and your dedication, warmth, and wisdom have left an everlasting impact on my life and my baby’s first chapter.

Dear AyeVee,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Midwifery Group Practice at Broome Hospital, and especially your kind words about Yvonne.

We’re truly delighted to hear that your third birth was such a positive and empowering experience. It’s wonderful to know that Yvonne’s care met your expectations and reflected the respectful, calm, and personalised support you were seeking. Your feedback highlights the importance of listening to birthing parents, honouring their choices, and creating a safe and nurturing environment—something we strive for in every birth.

We also appreciate your thoughtful recommendation regarding access to the midwifery area. Your concern is valid, and we will ensure it is passed on to the appropriate team for consideration. Improving access for expectant and new mothers is an important part of providing safe and dignified care.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story. We wish you and your family all the very best.

Warmest wishes,

Millie Stewart
