"Poor ED treatment"

About: Katanning Health Service / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

My elderly parent who is on blood thinners had a haemorrhage from a ruptured varicose vein their ankle. My parent is visually impaired so they could not see where to apply pressure or reach the spot. They live alone so called an ambulance. The bandages applied by the ambulance staff were enough to stop the bleeding by the time they reached hospital. I believe the nurse who triaged my parent was belittling and dismissive. I understand  they told my parent they were wasting everyone's time and would get a big ambulance bill. My parent was humiliated and will be reluctant to call an ambulance again. Care was non existent in my opinion.

Dear composeren55,

Thank you for taking the time to share your parent's recent experience at Katanning Health Service Emergency Department (ED). I am so sorry that this experience was poor and not in line with our values. Protecting patient dignity, treating patients with respect and ensuring comfort are core values we strive to uphold, and it’s disheartening to hear that these values were not reflected in your parents care.

We appreciate your honest feedback regarding the behaviour of the triage nurse. We understand how important a respectful and professional environment is, especially in an emergency presentation where patients feel particularly vulnerable and are seeking professional care. Your feedback has been noted and will be shared with the relevant teams and personnel to ensure we focus on and maintain the highest standards of professionalism and sensitivity in all patient areas.

If you would like to provide more specific information that we can follow up with the staff concerned you are welcome to contact me direct on 0429 103 370.

We appreciate your feedback and for helping us improve through constructive feedback.

Kind regards

Kate Varian
