"Disappointing rudeness"

About: Patient Assisted Travel Scheme - WACHS Kimberley

(as a relative),

I’m currently in Perth I am originally from Fitzroy Crossing, my partner has been flown to ICU in Perth. Now in Fiona Stanley. We have been down here since last week using our own funds, because if it’s not in an Aboriginal hostel they don’t assist you, and you either get reimbursed or if it’s a PATS hotel they can pay it directly to the hotel. My partner has been transferred to Fiona Stanley, and our accommodation runs out on Thursday, I’ve contacted the ALO, and the social worker here. I can’t stay 3 hours away while my partner is in ICU.

The social worker has sought accommodation close by. I went to the hotel, they accept PATS. I have booked for the two weeks with my own money. I have gone to the ALO and they said to contact PATS in Derby. And the staff member at PATS, I felt they were just rude. They said I would have to put that into an email, they didn’t want to take my details over the phone. I asked whether they could possibly contact the ALO at Fiona Stanley and I recall they said ‘no that’s your problem’ I also have a 13 year old child. I don't have a computer with me so I cannot email.

Look I did yell at the staff member. I believe that if you’re working in a position like that, and people are being sent away thousands of kilometers from home you need to be kind. My partner has emphysema, influenza A and B and other conditions. They're on life support and we are taking it one day at a time.

We got flown from Fitzroy Crossing several days ago and I haven’t received any support from PATS.

I already sought out my own accommodation, I believe if I hadn’t done that I wouldn’t have gotten any accommodation.

Dear filinghw64,

I am very sorry to hear about your distressing experience when communicating with PATS Derby. I acknowledge how challenging it must be to be away from home with a young child, and with your partner in ICU.

Delivering a service with care and compassion is important to us and your experience highlights where we must improve. I will ensure that your concerns are addressed with our staff.

I commend your determination in finding accommodation that meets you needs and want to assure you that you are eligible for a PATS subsidy towards your accommodation during your stay. I understand that PATS Derby are now working with you and your accommodation provider to facilitate this as a priority.

If you would like to discuss this further, you can contact me on 9194 2222 or James.Sherriff@health.wa.gov.au.

Regards

James Sherriff
