"Transport logistics between country hospitals and Perth"

About: Margaret River Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Presented at the ED with high temperatures associated with Myleodysplastic  neoplasms (mds). I got absolutely top care from the staff but unfortunately they could not provide the treatment I needed which is available for me at SCGH.

This is where the problem arose as I was too unwell to make my own way to Perth, a 3 hour drive by car. The Rfds became involved to expedite matters, but this turned into a complete disaster as it took just on 7 hours from the time I departed Margaret Rivet until I arrived at SCGH due to what I believed to be the disorganisation of the coordinating services.

For example 2 hours ramping at Bunbury waiting on the Rfds plane to leave Albany to collect me in Bunbury, ( why they could not divert to Margaret River is a mystery). Meanwhile our only resident paramedic is out of the district for 4 hours which I felt was totally unnecessary. The Twenty minute flight to Jandakot went smoothly only to have to be ramped there for 1 1/2 hours before an ambulance arrived to take me the last 40 minutes to SCGH.

Once I arrived at SCGH I was admitted post haste and my treatment began

Dear Mds sufferer

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following your recent presentation to the Margaret River Emergency Department. We’re very pleased to hear that you received excellent care from our staff during what must have been a very distressing time for you. Your kind feedback will be shared with the team, who always strive to provide the best possible care for our patients.

We are, however, very sorry to hear about the difficulties you experienced with the transfer process to Perth for your treatment. Unfortunately, some specialist treatments — including those related to Myelodysplastic Neoplasms (MDS) — are not available within the South West region and require transfer to tertiary hospitals such as Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). We understand how frustrating and uncomfortable these delays can be, particularly when you are unwell and in need of timely treatment.

While the coordination of patient transport, including the St John Ambulance (SJA) and Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) components, is managed externally to our hospital, we appreciate how these system-wide challenges can significantly impact patients and their families. Your feedback helps highlight the real-world difficulties of accessing specialist care from regional areas, and it will be shared with the relevant partners to support ongoing improvements in patient transfer processes.

Thank you again for sharing your story and for acknowledging the care provided by our local team. We wish you all the best with your ongoing treatment and recovery.

Kind regards

Marie Tweedie
