"Bad experience"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

It has taken over a year to get to what injuries I have from a motor vehicle accident. At the time of the accident, the emergency department sent me home with Panadol. Without revealing all my medical and personal information, it turned out my injuries from the motor vehicle were a lot more than originally anticipated. I was told the person who I saw at the outpatient did not want to see me privately so I waited more than 3-4 months to get the appointment.

I am not able to sit, sleep or stand properly through no fault of my own (the person who hit me with the car was at fault). I felt like nothing had been really read in my file or an understanding of why I was actually there. It was a case of someone who didn't want to deal with motor vehicle insurance thereby didn't want to deal with my case.

It's not a tantrum about being told no, it's about barely been seen and heard with regards to the problems I presented with and leaving feeling gross about the situation. It definitely came across to me as a gendered dismissal about my pain and symptoms. I was told because of my carer (child raising) and personal commitments I would not be happy with the outcome. My notes and situation, which has been complex through no direct fault of my own, covered why I was told about the surgical option. I feel you would never say this to a male patient or tell him that he couldn't have a potential surgery as an option because he has a family. The person has no idea what can or cannot be arranged with pre-planning.

As someone who is proactive and advocates quite well for themselves, I have never felt more defeated and not heard after attending this medical appointment.

I was also told my concerns about my lower quality of life might be c**p but they (according to the person) weren't that urgent and I could come back in a year. I was also told to go get private health insurance for a motor vehicle claim.

I filed a complaint about my experience and a more in-depth detail about what was said to me (including some things I will not add for confidentiality reasons) basically blew me off with the orthopedics ward will read it but no proper action or timeline (which I am still following).

Dear NewBabyMama,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am very sorry to hear of the very long and difficult road to recovery you have had since being injured in a motor vehicle accident. We recognise the impact any delay in the assessment of injuries can have on the on a patient’s health and well-being and understand how frustrating and concerning this must be for you.

If you feel that your condition has not been thoroughly assessed or the discussion of the available options for treatment were not fully explored our medical teams can facilitate further review.

If you would be willing to provide your contact details, please reach out to the Consumer Liaison Service (CLS), who would be more than happy to contact the relevant team to let them know of your concerns and to look into your care specifically. The CLS can be reached via email at CLS@health.wa.gov.au or by phone on (08) 6457 2867.

Kind regards,

Renee De Prazer
