"Dietary requirement situation"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus

(as the patient),

I was an inpatient at KHC 3 months ago on maternity ward. The ward team were absolutely incredible, the midwives are such beautiful people!

The issue I had was with the kitchen. I am coeliac and was advised prior to being admitted, the kitchen caters for coeliac patients. Well, I certainly did not experience this! I mentioned to a midwife when I was on the ward about my requirement, she rung the kitchen and asked what the process was as she was unsure. Their response was ‘tick your preferred option on the menu and we will do our best to make it GF’

Being a hospital, I really thought this would be managed better. I fortunately am asymptomatic so I have no idea if I was contaminated but for anyone else who isn’t, what a shocking response from the kitchen team.

A couple of my meals, there were GF crackers or biscuits! My husband ended up bringing most of my meals from home as I was too scared to trust the meal provided!

Dear izarwp34,

Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we’re sorry to hear about the challenges you faced with catering during your stay. While our staff aim to provide safe and supportive care, we acknowledge that there were gaps in how your dietary needs were managed. Your experience highlights the importance of clear processes and communication, particularly for patients with specific requirements such as coeliac disease.

Based on recent additional consumer feedback, we have already commenced reviewing our procedures and are conducting education within our teams to ensure dietary information is properly communicated and managed across departments. Your feedback is valuable in helping us improve the system across the whole hospital and not just in specific areas.

Warm regards,
Hamish Burton
