"The care and comfort given to Patrick"

About: Bunbury Hospital / South West Palliative Care Service

(as a relative),

Patrick suffered 2 seizures on 2 November 2021 and later diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Tumour. Patrick wanted to move to the country for the peace and fresh air so we moved into our house in Dalyellup on the 17th January,2025.

I am his wife and carer and took him to his appointments to the Bunbury Hospital or to our local GP. During that time we somehow made contact with the Palliative Care Team in Bunbury and on Patricks team we came into contact with Ally who continually tried to find ways of helping Patrick with movement and Anthony who made sure that he had all the necessary appliances or tools to move around the house safely and comfortably.

Anthony came to the house to check on Patricks needs and sent into the Office requests for the following :

Grab rails were installed in the front and back of the house.

A Toilet seat was fitted as well as Grab rails and shower hose in the ensuite.

But when it got too difficult to help Patrick in the ensuite, it was organised to get him a chair thingy that helped in using the bath in the bathroom.

a ramp was placed at the back of the house so that it was so that I could wheel Pat easily into the house in his wheelchair also organised by Anthony. He also received a Hospital bed for his comfort. Anthony and Ally were constantly phoning to make sure we were managing and Ally was always trying to set up Pat with different Walkers because Pats left side was not working at all. Also trying to set him up with little gadgets that made his shoes more comfortable for walking.

Well it came to the time when I could not manage because Pat was not able to move around and I contacted Ally and she came to the house together with Anthony and a Nurse who immediately said that Pat need to be in hospital. This took place on 20st May 2025 and Pat was finally admitted to Bunbury Hospital at 1:20am on 21st May, 2025. He was looked after by the Staff and Hospital very well except that Pat would tell them that they needed to speak with Ally and Anthony about how to look after him. Pat remained in hospital for about 8 weeks and that was only because the Palliative Team were arranging for Pat to have all the necessary things needed at home ie Proper Hospital Bed, and Anthony Upgraded the Wheelchair because Pat fell out of the wheelchair in the hospital.  A hoist was also in place and I together with any of my family who were around were given lessons on how to use it safely.

I together with our daughter and my SIL, when she was around, and also  the Support Workers from Pearl Home Care who came in for an hour a day we made Patricks journey as Safe and Peaceful and filled with with all the Love from his Family.

In conclusion I know that we was able to send Pat on his final journey in the way he deserved  because we had the Best Comfort and Support from the Bunbury Palliative Team and for that we  are Sincerely Grateful.

Thank You from a Very Grateful and Appreciative Family for making a very Tough Part of Life Easier to Handle.

Patrick's wife and the Family

Dear serpensww95

Thankyou for taking the time to share your experience at such a difficult and sad time. Can I express my deepest condolences on your loss. Losing a loved one is never easy. I am heartened to hear that you and your loved one received the care and attention that you required at a time when you really needed it. Having Pat sent on his final journey in a safe and peaceful way as you write can only be very comforting.

Providing end of life care that is person centred is something which the team pride themselves on doing and it is wonderful to hear that this precious time was made easier by the efforts of the team in working with you and your family in this way.

I trust that you are receiving ongoing support from your family and friends knowing that Pat is no longer in pain. I will pass on your thanks to the team.

Best wishes

Ceri Elliott
