I am sharing this story on behalf of my elderly mother - she's in her 70s and something happened about three months ago. My mum had come to visit me at the POWH where I was due to have minor surgery on right foot in the short stay ward.
She was carrying a bag of my belongings and got a bit lost - it's a new building - she was at the Barker Street reception desk and reception hadn't opened yet and she didn't know where to go. She saw a few nurses pass by, but unexpectedly a nurse approached her instead, and said you look a bit lost . So my mum explained that she wanted to see me, and she had no idea how to get to the short stay ward and this nurse told my mum it was quite a distance away, I know where it is. She said to my mum, please just wait here I'll get a wheelchair and take you there instead. My mother remembered how kind and reassuring this nurse was.
Moments later they returned and pushed my mum all the way to short stay ward counter, my mum was very touched by her actions. This nurse mentioned she was about to start her morning shift, and she said she is no longer working in a ward but in the remote community management center.
My mum said she will never forget her name - Suzanne. She said it was a small but deeply meaningful act of kindness. My mum said it is one of those moments that can go unnoticed in the rush of life but she will not forget it. It's a little action that means a lot.
