"Unacknowledged and Untreated in ED"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I presented at FSH Murdoch with a 9 day migraine and 5 days of non-epileptic seizures which were increasing in frequency. Over my 14 hour stay in ED I had roughly 15 seizures, increasing in length, and was only given one dose of nurofen and panadeine forte after my legs became paralysed from the shaking. I was never seen by a doctor, and it seemed I remained the lowest priority the entire stay, even after the leg paralysis set in. I have since managed to self-diagnose as a long term medication side-effect, and self-treat accordingly. In my opinion, the triage system and apparent medical neglect is insanely wrong, and I have yet to receive any explanation after submitting a formal complaint about 12 weeks ago (I believe they're supposed to take 6 weeks to respond).

Dear ‘chronicpain’,

Thank you for raising your concerns regarding the recent care you received at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Emergency Department (ED). I am truly sorry to hear about the distressing circumstances you described and the impact this has had on you.

It is very concerning to read that you felt our ED was unable to provide the care you needed. Our clinicians strive to understand each person’s presenting situation and determine the best way to treat and support their needs. We understand just how important timely care and clear communication is, particularly in situations involving severe symptoms such as migraines and seizures. I am sorry that on this occasion you did not feel heard or supported in the way we would expect.

I note that you mentioned that you have already submitted a formal complaint and have not received a response within the expected timeframe. As this is an anonymous platform, it is difficult for us to investigate your circumstances or provide advice regarding the outcome of your formal complaint. I would encourage you to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service (PFLS) on (08) 6152 4013 during business hours or email FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au. This will allow us to assist you directly and provide you an update on the status of your complaint.

Please know that at Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group, we remain committed to delivering the highest standard of care to our patients, and I am truly sorry that this was not reflected in your experience.
