"Antenatal Classes"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery

(as the patient),

Recently I attended my first antenatal class at Broome Hospital run by the lovely midwife Lindsay with a special guest anaesthetist Dr Ollie.

I just wanted to express to WACHS how important and valuable these classes are to first time parents and strongly urge you to support your maternity team with being allowed to continue these alongside the positive birthing/hypnobirthing options.

I am aware the positive birthing classes are seemingly favoured by WACHS these days as they are evidence based however i think its important to remember what the health consumer wants and my personal feedback is that the practical hands on classes delivered by midwives are superior and more useful for first time parents (in my case). Massive thanks to Lindsay the midwife and i hope Broome Hospital maternity can take on this feedback and implement it.

Dear pyxisqd55,

We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed your first antenatal class with Lindsay and Dr Ollie. It’s wonderful to know how valuable these sessions are for first-time parents, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to let us know.

We understand how important practical, hands-on learning is, especially for new parents. Broome was one of the first WA Country Health sites to offer the Positive Birth Program face-to-face, and it was very well received. COVID restrictions paused those sessions, so we’re thrilled to bring them back and grateful to the midwives who completed additional training to make this possible.

The Positive Birth Program is evidence-based and covers all the essential topics—labour and birth, stages of labour, support techniques, interventions, pain management, and decision-making. There’s plenty of scope for demonstrations, practice, and discussion, and Broome midwives are committed to making these sessions interactive and practical.

We also plan to offer classes on the 4th Trimester, Breastfeeding, and Early Parenting—developed with input from midwives, lactation consultants, Ngala, and Child Health Nurses. These are currently available via Telehealth, and once the birth program is running smoothly, we’ll expand local options based on feedback like yours.

Thanks so much for reaching out! We really appreciate your feedback and look forward to using it to make things even better.

Warmest wishes,

Millie Stewart
