"Emergency Care at the hospital"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child attended FSH early hours of the morning following a 10m fall from a cliff. After being triaged and  reviewed by a Dr in the corridor we waited for 4 hours before being seen by another Dr who discharged with a suspected gluteus maximus strain. No x-rays or imaging was done.

Upon returning home my child was in excruciating pain and was unable to mobilise. I took them to our nearest urgent care where they were assessed and x-rayed promptly, revealing a fracture in their pelvis. We were advised to return to FSH ED for orthopaedic assessment.

We then returned at approx 10am in the morning where we were again assessed, triaged and my child was provided pain relief and cannulated.  The cannula was causing intense pain in their arm for several hours, despite my child and myself raising this concern, it wasn't until another RN re-situated the cannula that this pain was resolved.

They were subsequently discharged at midnight with advice to use crutches for 6 weeks and they would be seen subsequently in the fracture clinic. We still do not know the outcome of the CT scan and if there is any other pathology requiring followup. Whilst individual care from most parties was fabulous, the whole care experience was, in my opinion, sub-standard for a tertiary level public institution in a wealthy state.

Dear ‘gruscd37’',

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us regarding your child's recent experience at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Emergency Department (ED). I can hear from your description how distressing and frustrating this situation must have been, particularly whilst your child is in pain and awaiting answers.

Our Emergency Department do their best to understand each person’s presenting situation and how best to treat and support their needs. I am sorry that from your words shared it is evident that on this occasion you did not feel heard or supported in the way we would expect.

As this is an anonymous platform, it is difficult for us to investigate the circumstances or provide you with a detailed response. I encourage you to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service (PFLS) on (08) 6152 4013 during business hours, or email at FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au. The PFLS team will be happy to assist you and then we can ensure you receive the care and information required.

Please know that at Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group, we remain committed to delivering the highest standard of care to our patients, and I am truly sorry that this is not reflected in your experience.
