"Liver Surgery"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Hepatology Department and Liver Transplant Service

(as the patient),

The surgery has now been cancelled twice last minute. The second time I was gowned up and laying in a bed for 8 hours until they told me it had been cancelled.

The original consultation to figure out what was needed was cancelled twice before I was seen on the third attempt too.

While waiting for my operation (to no longer even go ahead) 3 patients who hasn't signed consent forms (I had signed mine 16 weeks ago) and 2 who I believe had ignored the fasting rules/taken medicine when they weren't supposed to, all still went ahead with their surgery while I had to wait and then be cancelled.

I understand my surgery is complex and only certain surgeons can operate but I feel there has been a severe lack of communication and care for my health

Thank you for reaching our and sharing your story on the Care Opinion platform. I was very sorry to hear of the last minute cancellation of your surgery on two occasions and would like to acknowledge and apologise for the distress and inconvenience that this caused.

I would like the opportunity to review your situation further and to investigate the circumstances that led to the cancellations. I would encourage you to contact our Consumer Liaison Service (phone: 6457 2867 or email: CLS@health.wa.gov.au) to provide your personal details, so that we are able to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure an appropriate plan is in place for rescheduling your surgery.

I can assure you that we are committed to providing patients with safe and timely care and I sincerely apologise for the delays you have experienced.

Kind regards,

Dr Jodi Graham
