I gave birth to my baby at Osborne Park Hospital in late 2023 and am still scarred by the experience. I am due to give birth to my second in one month and can only pray for a better experience at KEMH.
I had several large fibriods that were in the way of giving birth naturally and other health complications so a C Section was decided.
The lead up was all fine except for being bounced around by so many different doctors and opinions. The post surgery was traumatic. No real support from any of the team despite them knowing my history with health issues and anxiety. During surgery, one of the fibroids was removed from the lining. I couldn’t get out of bed to tend to my baby due to the extreme pain. No one came to help with my baby the whole night after surgery despite them non stop crying. I couldn’t move and felt so bad. Seemed to be the least of the nurses worries. Later realised the reason my baby was crying so much was that they weren’t latching properly so hadn’t had any milk at all over the two days. Very sad, I felt so bad and hardly knew what I was doing.
Nurses and doctors decided to discharge me after 48 hours despite me voicing I did not feel ready. I was so out of it on meds I could hardly stand. Felt like they just needed to free the bed and get me out. It is really appalling treatment of a new mother who has just had major abdominal surgery. I have since heard the same stories from so many women and it is heartbreaking. I believe more care and longer recovery times in hospital really needs to be implemented asap. Family members who gave birth 5+ years ago have said they were in for ten days plus after a normal C -section. What has happened to the this?
Sure enough, I started haemorrhaging two weeks later and was readmitted into hospital for another 6 nights. I believe if I was able to recovery properly initially, this would not have been the case.
In my opinion hospitals need to do better for women and stop, as was my experience, making us feel like cattle class when we are meant to be experiencing the most magical time of our lives.
