As a first-time parent being sent to ED I must admit, I was feeling pretty anxious. It was late in the evening, and my little one was fussier than usual. The thought of navigating ED with a newborn had me nervous, but from the moment we walked in, the experience couldn't have been better.
We were seen quickly by a doc called Ian which was such a relief. I had expected a long wait, given that it was a busy time, but we were ushered through and he was very kind and welcoming, but what really stood out was the children’s doctor who saw us Dr Lana and a male asian doctor was with her but I forgot their name. She was absolutely wonderful and so warm, patient, and approachable even when I knew she was busy as her phone wouldn’t stop ringing.
She took the time to listen to all of my concerns, even the ones I thought might be too minor. When I mentioned some feeding struggles, she didn't just give me a quick answer or brush me off. She really took the time to explain everything in detail and even gave tricks to help save time with pumping parts and formula prep. She reassured me that these struggles are completely normal, which made me feel so much better. We left feeling empowered, rather than overwhelmed, with a bunch of new knowledge that made me feel more confident about caring for my lil man. It was such a refreshing change from what I’d expected in a busy ED setting.
You turned what could have been a chaotic night into a reassuring experience, and I’ll never forget that kindness.
