"Mistreatment at the hospital"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Recently one afternoon I attended the Emergency Department at Bunbury Regional hospital with my child due to a wrist injury. At the time, we believed their wrist may have been dislocated. The temperature outside was over 35°C.

My child was in pain, extremely tired, and overheated. When we entered the Emergency Department, they became very distressed and was crying and screaming. I attempted to comfort and calm them while waiting to be triaged.

A triage nurse instructed us to leave the Emergency Department and go back outside so that I could calm my child down before they would be seen. I explained that the heat was making their condition worse and that they were distressed due to pain and exhaustion. Despite this, we were required to leave the building.

Once outside in the extreme heat, my child's distress escalated further. We were not offered an alternative indoor area to wait, and no triage nurse or clinician came outside to assess their condition. As a result, my child was not triaged at this time.

While we were outside, I understand at least three other patients who arrived after us were permitted to enter the Emergency Department and receive care.

Because my child was not allowed to re-enter the Emergency Department unless they calmed down, and due to the impact of the heat on their condition, we ultimately left the hospital without my child being assessed.

We later returned to the hospital, where my child was assessed. Imaging confirmed that they had two fractures in their wrist.

Dear silverwarefm96,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion. I am genuinely concerned to read about the distress you and your child experienced during your presentation to the Emergency Department. I am deeply sorry that this experience left you feeling unsupported and that your child’s injuries were later confirmed to be fractures. This is not the experience we would want for any child or family seeking care.

I acknowledge how upsetting this situation would have been, particularly given your child’s pain, exhaustion, and the extreme heat on the day. It is especially worrying to hear that you felt you had no option but to leave without your child being assessed, and that no alternative indoor area or clinical review was offered at that time. I also note your concern that other patients were able to enter the department while you and your child were required to remain outside.

We recognise that your story is an opportunity for us to learn from and we would like to investigate further. To help us to do this, we would be grateful if you could make contact with us directly by calling 08 9753 6537 to speak with our consumer feedback coordinator or email swfeedback@health.wa.gov.au. We’d really appreciate if you could contact us so we can obtain some additional details and investigate what occurred, including reviewing triage processes and staff actions on the day. Your feedback is important and helps us identify where we can improve our care.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. We recognise the courage it can take to raise concerns, particularly when it relates to your child’s wellbeing.

Kind regards,

Jeff Calver
