"Care for a sporting injury"

About: Armadale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My relative attended the ED recently in the afternoon after a sporting injury and all I can say is I wish we had of attended another hospital.

My relative presented at triage then on to the ward clerk both of whom I felt were rude, which surely isn't part of employment requirements.

My relative was sent for an xray of their ankle then taken through to see a Doctor and I believe the care they received certainly didnt improve.

My relative was informed there were no breaks and if its still sore return in a few days and they could go home, my relative was asked what they did for employment and they stated manual work to which they were told they would be fine just walk on it, they couldn't even put any weight on it.

They weren't offered any pain relief scripts nor suggestions for at home and no mention of crutches etc to assist them ambulate nothing, my relative has now been sat at home with their leg elevated for several days its purple from bruising and so so swollen.

I believe your ED needs to do better, I understand that they are busy constantly, I think it isn't an excuse to seemingly treat patients like they are on a human conveyor belt.

Dear avocetfn53,

Thank you for sharing your relative’s recent experience in our Emergency Department. I’m sorry to hear that aspects of the visit left them feeling the care was rushed and that some interactions came across as rude or not as supportive as they expected. This is not the experience we aim to provide.

You mentioned that your relative’s ankle remains very swollen despite keeping it elevated for several days. Ongoing or worsening symptoms can be a sign that further review is needed, and I would encourage them to return for reassessment or seek further medical attention if they haven’t done so already.

As Care Opinion is anonymous, we are unable to review this further without more information. Please contact our Consumer Liaison Service on (08) 9391 1153 or AKG_ConsumerLiaison@health.wa.gov.au so we can follow up appropriately.

Thank you again for taking the time to let us know.

Kind regards

Alisha Thompson
