"The current situation with another patient"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / 2 East (Medical Unit)

(as a relative),

My elderly parent was admitted recently to the ward where they have been receiving great medical attention with highly dedicated nurses and working members.

Unfortunately, there is a patient on the floor, who, in my opinion, shouldn’t be here. They are always abusive towards the nurses who are constantly trying to assist this patient for things that they seemingly don't need, but thinks they think they do and forgets that staff have attended to, which comes at the expense of the time of other patients.

A couple of days ago this patient started telling me that I am mean, just like the staff. I don’t understand things and that I am not kind or helpful at all. I feel abused and am worried now for my parent's safety. This patient is crowding me since they come close to the ward’s entrance all the time and says all these things over and over again. It seems that they need one on one help which is a challenge and even then, they aren't satisfied.

I hope someone of authority will look into this and do something about it because this has been ongoing for 4 months and I don’t think is sustainable. Thank you.

Dear scorecardfb46,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with us. We appreciate you acknowledging the dedication and care provided by our medical and nursing staff, and we are pleased to hear that your parent has been receiving attentive treatment. We are very sorry to learn about the experience you described while visiting the ward. No relative or visitor should feel uncomfortable while supporting a loved one, and we take such feedback seriously.

While we are unable to discuss the circumstances or care needs of other patients, we would like to reassure you that situations involving patient behaviour, visitor safety, and staff wellbeing are actively monitored and managed by our clinical and leadership teams. We will also ensure that your feedback is escalated to the appropriate ward management team for review.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Your feedback helps us improve the experience and safety of patients, families, and staff alike. Should you wish to discuss this further, please contact SESLHD-SSEHExecutiveServices@health.nsw.gov.au.

Regards,

Dr Pauline Rumma
Director of Clinical Services

Natalie Maier
Director of Nursing and Support Services.
