"The finest kind of people"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / 2 East (Medical Unit)

(as the patient),

I was released from a ten day stay in Ward 2E early on Christmas Eve.  I had been admitted for an eye emergency earlier this month.  The ward was not restricted to eye patients, there were general health issues and several mental/emotional/physical cases.  As I understand it, the complex cases had been there for months as they were trying to be place in more appropriate facilities.  These patients' behaviour, and lack of control, led to extreme challenges for the nursing staff. Security was needed several nights.

Despite the stress that these patients caused, the nurses I saw were wonderful!  They showed the same patient caring to everyone, regards of how they were treated.  They were kind, gentle and always helpful.

I saw many nurses during my stay, all different, all with big hearts, and the ability to handle multiple, complex situations.  They helped each other with warm teamwork.

For me, it was a stressful time, as I had lost 90% vision in my left eye.  So added to the environment was an unsure future.  They were kind to me, made sure I was taken care of.  They were the finest kind of people, I would not have made it through my time in @E without them.

I was in tears when  I said goodbye.

A lucky man, Moruya NSW

Dear A Lucky Man,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with us following your recent stay in Ward 2E. We are truly grateful for your thoughtful and generous feedback.

We understand that your admission was during a very stressful and uncertain time, but we are very pleased to hear that our nursing staff were able to support you with kindness, compassion, and professionalism during such a difficult period.

Your recognition of the nurses’ dedication, teamwork, and unwavering care, even under demanding circumstances, is deeply appreciated. Our staff work hard to ensure that every patient is treated with dignity and respect, and messages like yours mean a great deal to them, especially when caring for patients with diverse and complex needs.

We will be sure to share your comments with the Ward 2E team so they know the positive impact they had on your care and recovery. Thank you again for your kind words and for acknowledging the efforts of our staff.

Regards,

Natalie Maier
