"In patient Meals Ordering process"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as a relative),

Our elderly parent was recently in Fiona Stanley for just over one week. We are all grateful the good care provided however we would like to provide feedback about the meals online ordering system.

Our parent is not computer literate and needed assistance to order meals - sometimes they forgot to order. We believe the system in other hospitals is much better for elderly patients in particular - where a staff member takes the meal orders at a patient’s bedside.

It is not possible to order tin fruit and yoghurt for breakfast - our parent does not eat cereal or toast - so it was frustrating that the system does not accommodate this. Also, it is not possible to order ice cream with dessert- our parent eats very little but enjoys ice cream with a dessert like apple crumble etc. There is no consistency between hospitals as it is possible to order the aforementioned combinations at a different metropolitan hospital in Perth.

Thank you 🙏

Dear Loving daughter,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your elderly parent’s recent admission to Fiona Stanley Hospital. I appreciate you acknowledging the care provided during their stay.

I acknowledge that the current Patient Entertainment System (PES), the digital system in patient rooms used for both entertainment and ordering meals, can be difficult for some patients to use, particularly those who are not comfortable with digital systems. While fruits, yoghurt and ice cream are available to order, these items are not automatically included with regular meals, and I understand how this was frustrating for your family.

We do have processes in place where ward Food Service Assistants, and other staff can assist patients with meal ordering. It is disappointing that on this occasion this was either not communicated effectively or unclear for your parent. Please know that following your feedback we have discussed this with ward staff to ensure they are proactively supporting patients, including around managing meals and dietary requirements.

I appreciate your comments regarding menu flexibility and consistency across hospitals. A menu review is planned for 2026, and consumer input will be central to this process. Feedback such as yours will help inform improvements to better meet patient needs.

As a longer-term solution, we are exploring a more user-friendly ordering system to replace the current PES.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback. I wish you and your family a Happy New Year.

Kind regards

Luke Dix

Update posted by Loving daughter (a relative)

Thank you for your response and it is reassuring to know that steps are being taken to improve the functionality of the system and to be more user friendly.

Is it possible to express interest in participating in providing consumer feedback to contribute to the process? I have recent first hand experiences of extended stays in public and private hospitals.
