"Telehealth Lactation Consultant"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Breastfeeding Centre of WA Telehealth Service - WACHS Pilbara

(as the patient),

I reside in Port Hedland WA and was having issues breast feeding, I was advised to see a lactation consultant however via telehealth was my only option being in a remote town. I thought "what's a telehealth consult going to do, they can't see my latch" however I was desperate so was silly to not try.

I was linked up with Emma Louise from King Edward Breast Feeding Centre who was absolutely incredible. She validated all of my feelings and actions, gave me multiple suggestions on all my issues so I could do what made me comfortable, easy to contact if I had a question and my next appointment wasn't for some time. Absolutely everything she did was so validating and incredible.

I had a trip to Perth planned over Christmas and I was lucky enough to have Emma make some time to do a face to face consult with me. It was so nice to meet her and give her the cuddle I have always wanted to give her since day 1, and have her cuddle my baby. Emma honestly saved me and my breast feeding journey, I was so ready to give up multiple times. I guess I want my story to be shared to those mums who aren't in the headspace to take on help or may think that telehealth won't suffice.

I have a photo of myself, Emma and my baby that I am happy to share.

Dear Port Hedland Resident,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Breastfeeding Centre at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH).

I was so glad to read that despite going into the consult unsure of what help you would be able to receive virtually, Emma was quickly able to alleviate your worries with her knowledge. It is clear from your feedback that Emma’s validation and suggestions had such a positive impact, and I was so touched to read that with Emma’s support you felt empowered to continue your breastfeeding journey.

It was so heartwarming to hear that during your trip to Perth over Christmas you were able to meet and thank Emma in person, and give her that long awaited hug.

I will be sure to pass on this feedback to Emma and the rest of the team at the Breastfeeding Centre.

Wishing you and your family all the best for 2026.

Kind regards,

Melinda

Dear Port Hedland Resident,

I was so pleased to read of the positive experiences you have had with the Telehealth Service and the lactation consultation provided by Emma Louise, particularly given your initial misgivings. It is wonderful to hear the service provided you the access to Emma Louise who supported your wellbeing, making you feel validated and providing you with strategies enabling you to continue breastfeeding your baby.

Access to specialist lactation support via Telehealth is a key focus of the service, especially for families who may face barriers to timely, face-to-face care. I’m glad you all got to meet face to face during your recent visit to Perth, that must have a been a special moment.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story, particularly with other mothers who may be going through a similar experience and need support. Feedback such as yours helps inform service improvements and reinforces the importance of accessible, family-centred lactation care.
